If you followed me over the weekend you could not escape the fact that I was at The Simply Youth Ministry Conference! If you have been reading this blog for a while, you know I am huge fan of the conference and also part of the IT3 Team, (The ‘In the Trenches’ Team who helped to design and pull of the conference).
Here are 3 reasons from this years conference as to why I am deeply committed to going as a participant, as well as being invested in creating the conference with other youth workers:
- The Depth of The General Sessions: This year the general sessions were full of their usual hilarious antics, fun games, and giveaways. However, the worship and speakers took a whole new step of depth as we were challenged to be stronger, (the theme), in our relationship with God. Worship from Shane and Shane and the Jordan Howerton band was incredibly authentic and Spirit led. There was no show or concert feel, only God honoring worship.
- My Volunteers Received Great Training: This year all but one of my volunteers were first timers. Their response? Amazing. They were challenged, equipped, and encouraged by excellent in the trenches youth workers who gave them wonderfully practical training. They loved the general sessions and truly met with God as He ministered to them.
- The People, Connections, and Conversations: This is perhaps the best thing for me… Some of my friends made fun of me as they walked past Starbucks commenting that I was there too much! But for me, I received great training and encouragement as I met with some incredible youth ministry guru’s while I was also able to pour into younger youth workers too. A wise mentor once said that I should always be looking up to a ‘Paul’ in my life, while always trying to invest in a ‘Timothy.’
For me, the depth of conversational nature at SYMC is what sets this conference apart from others. The most experienced speakers were available for everyone to meet and grab a coffee with and there is never a ‘them and us’ atmosphere that I have seen at other conferences.
